2009 Educational Farm Field Trip Programs

“Classroom on the Farm”

Reservations Required. Space is limited. Call weekdays 601-594-0389 for further information or "click the make a reservation" button at the bottom of the page.

For 2009 we are again pleased to offer farm field trip programs designed to enhance classroom learning. Our programs are designed to increase children's awareness of the natural world through observation and hands-on activities. All programs will introduce children to the concepts of agriculture in an age appropriate environment.

The typical field trip itinerary is to arrive and park, teacher check in, welcome and brief orientation, visit learning stations and activities, eat a snack or lunch and depart. Make reservations today to bring your class to the Canton Corn MAIZE for an educational and entertaining field trip.

Field Trip General Q & A’s

What fees are involved?

The cost is $6.00 per child/$3 adult (nonparticipating infants under 2 admitted free). Teachers admitted free. $50.00 minimum fee per group. A single payment for the entire group greatly speeds up the check-in process.

How long does the field trip last?

Hours are 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Field trips are scheduled every thirty minutes beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00. All groups depart by 2:00 PM. Allow at least 3 hours for the field trip, including lunch time.

Is payment required in advance?

No. Please bring all admission fees with you the day of your scheduled field trip. We would appreciate your collecting the students and parents fees and paying in one sum. We request that you have payment ready on arrival to speed check-in.

Cancellations: We understand that there are times that emergencies arise and field trips cannot be honored. However other than an emergency, we expect you to honor your scheduled field trip time and date. We go to great lengths to ensure that we have staff on hand to accommodate the specific number scheduled for the day. There will be a charge of 50% of your admission price for no shows. Due to the fact that we have many groups calling to make reservations we request a 7 day advance cancellation to ensure that we can open up the slot for another group.

Refunds: Due to the fact that we staff according to the number of students attending for the day, we have a no refund policy.

Rain Outs: We will call you in the event that a field trip needs to be cancelled due to rain. We ask that you provide a phone number where you can be reached at all times. Please do not assume that if it is raining in your location that we are experiencing rain as well. In the event of a rain out, we will work with you to re-schedule another date and time.
As a normal procedure, we ask that you call the morning of your field trip to let us know that you are on time.

How many adults should attend?

We love parent participation and encourage as many adults as would like to attend. However, we ask that there be at least one adult per 8 children. We realize that this may not be possible for some schools. However, if possible we strongly recommend it.

What if we arrive late?

We ask that you please understand that we follow a strict schedule. This is important to ensure that all classes are able to visit every station. Should you arrive late, please understand that your students may not be able to participate in all of the stations. Also, should you arrive at the same time as another scheduled class, we will need to get them settled first before admitting your students.

What concession items are available?

The following is available at our concession stand: Fresh fruit, Nachos and cheese, various bagged chips, candy bars, popcorn, soft drinks and boiled peanuts. Call or email for a price list.

Are food items available other than snack foods?

Various items are available at the snack bar. These items include: fresh fruit, hot dogs, deli sandwiches, corn on the cob, cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones, ice cream. A menu and price list is available upon request. For faster service, if anyone in your group plan to purchase a food item from the snack bar for lunch, please order it upon arrival for later pick-up. For group orders, we need at least 72 hours advance notice. Quotes are available for group orders.

Is there a gift shop on-site?

There is a gift shop that features novelty candies, t-shirts, and home décor. Kids love the candy tree where candy is only a quarter.

Are picnic tables available?

Covered picnic tables are provided for your lunch or snack. You can choose to bring your own food or have us cater it for you. Group lunch orders should be placed at least 72 hours in advance. Please call for menus, pricing and ordering.

Are there any special circumstances that I need to know about?

The farm can be a difficult place for those suffering from asthma, or severe inhalant allergies and allergic reactions to bee stings. Therefore, we ask that you be aware of your students medical needs before their arrival. Please note that perfumes and fragrances tend to attract bees. For the summer season please be sure to bring plenty of sun screen. We do not administer medical attention or offer medical supplies. Therefore, we ask that you travel with a first-aid kit.

Are hand washing stations available?

Hand washing stations are provided. However, we encourage teachers to bring hand sanitizer.

Are drinking fountains available?

Water will be provided. Drinks are also available for purchase at our concession stands or the gift shop. If students are providing their own lunch, please encourage them to bring drinks with their lunch.

What toilet facilities are available?

We have one indoor facility at the gift shop and portable out-houses around the property.

Field Trip Info/Reservations

Dear Teachers and Administrators:

This year, many of our MAiZE sites--puzzles of cornstalks scattered around the world--are offering field trips in an effort to provide a unique, fun, educational activity that exposes children to "agriculture in the process." Many are combined with additional activities, such as: hayrides, pumpkin patches, etc.

If you would like to take your class through a MAiZE this fall, please Click here to make a reservation for your next field trip.

Curriculum

Hands-on learning experiences are always best when students have been prepared for what they are about to encounter. Below, please find information designed to help generate lesson ideas and activities that will challenge your students' knowledge about agriculture. If you are unable to open and/or print out this information, please contact the MAiZE location you will be visiting and request that they mail you a hard copy.
